American Dreamer

I’ve been reading American Dreamer written by Tommy Hilfiger for the past few months. Slowly but surely I’m getting through it. I suppose I like to take my time when I read, as I always find myself taking much longer than others to finish books. The book recounts Tommy Hilfiger’s life in fashion and entrepreneurship from the time he was a young child onwards. I’ve really enjoyed reading it so far as I’m very interested in fashion and Tommy Hilfiger is my favourite clothing brand. If I wasn’t pursuing graphic design, I’d be pursuing fashion design. I suppose I’m in a way pursuing both because If I ever find myself with an opportunity to step into the fashion world I’m going to take it. I love graphic design and fashion design equally and they usually go hand in hand, so I just hope I end up with a well-paying job that I like to do, whether it’s graphic design or fashion design.

So far in the book Tommy is beginning his transition into formulating his own brand identity. He’s already drawn interest of many individuals in the industry and has proved to be an extremely talented designer. He also ran into many mistakes along the way and got brutally crossed by some sleazy persons who only cared about money. I think this book will really benefit me and my future because I took away a lot of themes and lessons from it. The book made me realize that there will be people who will help me just to help me, and there will be people who will ruin me just to ruin me. Looking out for and being close with the people who can help you and who you trust is extremely important. The book also gave me this invigorating sense of tenacity and endurance. I feel more prepared for my future having read this book. Empathizing with and understanding Tommy Hilfiger’s struggles and endeavors made me appreciate the proverbial “manifest destiny” that old American culture cultivated so concretely. I don’t necessarily believe that anyone can work hard in society and be rewarded equally to the next man, but I do appreciate and understand that hard work CAN and usually will reap great rewards.

I’m excited to finish this book no matter how long it might take me, and I hope the next book i read is as good as this.
